“We want to be positive and entertain,”says Dirty Heads vocalist Jared
Watson. “We just want to make you feel good.”
                                     Â
Those feel-good roots of the Dirty Heads are grounded in the Orange
County community of Huntington Beach. Founded nearly a decade ago by
Watson and guitarist/vocalist Dustin Bushnell, the Dirty Heads humble
beginnings feature too many late night sessions in the garage with
nothing but a four-track recorder and an abundance of great ideas.
                                     Â
Watson met Bushnell during their freshman year of high school at a local
party. Stumbling upon a quick rap tape that Bushnell had recorded,
Watson became inspired enough to invite Bushnell to collaborate with him
on ideas. While Bushnell had been playing in a punk band at the time,
Watson had never been in a band, never wrote or sang – rather, his
interests ran deep in the surf and skating culture. But he was willing
 to give this a shot.
                                     Â
With a far broader range of ideas, both musically and lyrically, they
started writing hip-hop songs with reggae inflections and a punk
 attitude in Bushnell’s soundproofed garage.
                                     Â
As for the origins of band’s name, chalk it up to their wilder side.
“Someone’s older brother called us ‘dirty heads’ one day,”says Watson.
“We actually stole a 12-pack of beer and he was pissed, so he was like,
‘Come here you little dirty heads!”
                                     Â
The duo hooked up with Dirty Heads’ percussionist Jon Olazabal. With a
set of solid material, the Dirty Heads began taking their craft
seriously and began to perform acoustically.
                                     Â
The Dirty Heads next connected with producers with Steve Fox and Stan
Frazier (Sugar Ray/Ashlee Simpson). Cutting tracks with the production
team, the Dirty Heads began showcasing in the Los Angeles scene,
chartering party buses so their fans could make the 30-mile trek from
Huntington Beach to L.A. and back. “We went from one bus to two buses to
 four buses”,says Watson.
                                     Â
Recording with Fox and Frazier opened opportunities for the Dirty Heads
to enlist guests on its album, including high-profile drummer Josh
Freese (A Perfect Circle, Sting, The Vandals), veteran percussionist
Alex Acuna and the late Billy Preston. “That was the cherry on top of
 everything,” Watson recalls.
                                     Â
To bring it all together and create just the right vibe, Dirty Heads
recruited mixing engineer Mario Caldato Jr. “We loved the way the Jack
Johnson and Beastie Boys albums sounded, and we asked, ‘Who mixed both
of these albums?”,says Watson, “and surprisingly, Mario C. had mixed
 both.”
                                     Â
The recent necessity for a proper rhythm section for the live show
brings on two other special musicians, Matt Ochoa on drums as an
official member of the Dirty Heads, and sideman Siggy Sjoursen on bass.
Both bring their talents and extensive years of playing to create an
 unparalleled live experience.
                                     Â
The band has recently wrapped touring the country with 311 & Matisyahu
on the Summer Unity Tour 2007 playing for thousands of new fans. They
continue to tour on their own and supporting like minded artists.

BlakRoc – Blakroc 2009
About the Album
An album featuring the Black Keys and some of the biggest names in hip-hop will be released Nov. 27 2009 (the so-called “Black Friday” day after Thanksgiving) under the name Blakroc.
The project was spearheaded by rapper Jim Jones and also sports contributions from Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, NOE, Nicole Wray, Billy Danze and the late Ol’ Dirty ~censored~.

Clutchy Hopkins
Who exactly is Clutchy Hopkins? That’s the million-dollar question that became a favorite topic on various Internet chat boards when a dozen undeniably funky and up-to-date instrumental beat tracks, each one titled only by its running time, appeared as The Life of Clutchy Hopkins in 2006 from the Misled Children imprint. Hopkins, it appeared, was either a clever media creation or actually an aging revolutionary savant effortlessly in touch with the music of the 21st century. A mystery man dressed up as a stylish enigma, he really seemed too good to be true. The “official” bio for Hopkins seemed preposterous at best, telling the story of the son of a Motown recording engineer who traveled to Japan in his twenties to study with Rinzai monks, then to India to study Raja yoga, and from there Hopkins, so the story goes, journeyed to Nigeria to study percussion, becoming as well a gun-runner and revolutionary. Returning to the U.S., Hopkins reportedly recorded with numerous jazz, funk, and avant combos from the early ’70s through the late 1990s, always refusing to have his name cited on any of the projects. Tapes of his own music were supposedly uncovered at a swap meet in the Mojave Desert on reels simply marked C. Hopkins and accompanied by a handwritten autobiographical manuscript. Hopkins is now, so the story continues, either a busking beach hobo in Southern California or a recluse living in a cave in the Mojave Desert. All of this was understandably difficult to swallow, and theories about Hopkins’ actual identity have ranged from MF Doom, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, or one of or all of the Beastie Boys moonlighting and pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes. The one clear thing is that the music on The Life of Clutchy Hopkins is a marvelously concocted and amazingly fresh and contemporary mesh of funk, hip-hop, jazz, and straight-out weird orchestral psychedelia (Hopkins reportedly played all the instruments, which include drums, bass, guitar, organ, flute, melodica, and assorted percussion, himself) that suggests Mr. Hopkins must have had a pretty good Internet connection in that Mojave cave.
