External Reviews
Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones was still licking some serious wounds due to the breakup of his 12-year relationship with his girlfriend and a fallout with a best mate. The band’s 2001 release, Just Enough Education to Perform, briefly touched upon his broken heart; however, Jones’ darkest period came later as the band played countless sold-out gigs across Europe throughout late 2001 and 2002. Jones found himself personally and professionally isolated — emotionally distant from his bandmates and best friends, drummer Stuart Cable and bassist Richard Jones, and creatively exhausted. However the fire that had made this band a major force in the post-grunge English rock scene still burned. Stereophonics’ fourth album, You Gotta Go There to Come Back captures Jones’ soulful journey, and the band’s classic rowdy rock style is as sultry as ever. While their three previous albums exuded cockiness just for the sake of being cocky, You Gotta Go There to Come Back doesn’t care to be so snide. Sure, the band’s classic swagger remains an integral part of its overall appeal, but moving beyond that silly behavior has somehow affected Jones and his band. Cable became a father during the recording of this album while Richard Jones settled down and got married. Perhaps Jones craves a bit of stability as well? His confidence is on par throughout these 13 blues-rock-tinged songs as his life unfolds through words. “Jealousy” and “You Stole My Money Honey” are the album’s more vexed moments. “Climbing the Wall,” layered in acoustic guitars and horn and string arrangements, and “Nothing Is Precious at All” continue Stereophonics’ psychological sifting with warmth. “Madame Helga” is the punch in the face Jones has been waiting to deliver. Heart-pounding musicianship from the band itself makes this swanky gospel number an album standout and a career staple. It’s a song that Stereophonics have been wanting to make for years, and the overall fierce presentation finds the band at its best. Stereophonics are consistent with their craft, and You Gotta Go There to Come Back highlights the band’s growing talent as musicians, but the fact is that they’ve only made good records up to this point. They have yet to make a really great record, but that’s not to say Stereophonics don’t have what it takes. You Gotta Go There to Come Back is a solid rock effort, and in due time, the band will have its epic.

Release Notes:
——–
ince 2006 there have been excited, often fantastic, rumours among would-be
connoisseurs of the underground British rock scene of a trio that has spent
three years simmering just beneath the scope of the mainstream, perfecting
themselves and preparing the industry for their explosive arrival. Tales tell of
a band that boasts a guitarist to rival Hendrix and a drummer so powerful that
the very foundations of venues shake under a Bonham-esque assault wherever they
perform. Crowds across the continent have been left in amazement, while Radio
One has labelled the band’s live performances “awe inspiring”.

The band under such wide discussion is The Brew; It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll
Magazine are already hailing them as “the best three piece to come out of the UK
in 20 years.”

Jason Barwick and father/son team Tim and Kurtis Smith began playing together
almost five years ago and have steadily expanded their audience through a series
of successful tours and TV performances. The band has no defined hierarchy, and
don’t need one. Each member brings his own incredible asset to the musical
experience, whether it’s Jason’s jaw-dropping guitar artistry, Kurt’s explosive
drums or Tim’s majestic charisma, the band perform as one perfectly synchronised
unit.

In May this year countries around Europe discovered The Joker, the band’s second
self-released album. Both the album and its title track shot to number 16 and 10
in the Polish album and singles chart respectively. Jase, Kurt and Tim found
themselves suddenly introduced to Europe on a scale they hadn’t foreseen,
including a string of festival appearances and sponsor deals, playing alongside
such legends as Jeff Beck and receiving personal praise from the likes of Chad
Smith. They were soon booked to appear at Rockpalast in Cologne and, due to
headliner Bonamassa’s reluctance to do a TV recording, their entire set was
broadcast live on German WDR TV and their rise to European fame leapt across the
Rhine.

Brian Wilson - Pet Sounds Live In London

Not my quote

In early 2002, during his first solo tour of Europe and England, Brian Wilson included complete performances of his masterpiece Pet Sounds, which attempted to re-create, in a live setting, one of the greatest feats of studio wizardry in rock history. He recorded the music heard on Pet Sounds Live over four nights at London’s Royal Festival Hall before a crowd packed with luminaries (simply read the liners for a lengthy who’s-who list of intelligent pop musicians in attendance). Though he has trouble taking some of the leads he or brother Carl originally sang some 35 years earlier, the backing harmonies are surprisingly good (even in comparison to the nonpareil Beach Boys), and the ten-piece band is marvelous at summoning the necessary range of emotions, following the arrangements closely (“Let’s Go Away for Awhile” alone must have taken days to perfect), and adding innumerable little touches for the benefit of those possessing a near-total familiarity with the original. To all this praise, however, must be added the considerable caveat: Wilson’s stage presence is still problematic, if not completely bizarre. He still sounds tentative and forced when pressed to live performance, at one point interjecting “Hooray for the audience!” into a blank void; later, it’s difficult to tell whether he’s joking when he twice announces, “Here’s an instrumental, with no voices, OK?” Those who’ve seen a Wilson concert before won’t be surprised at the push-and-pull between clever musicianship and embarrassing showmanship, while curious Pet Sounds fans will find only scattered bits to intrigue them.

Immolation - Majesty And Decay (2010)

Since the release of their debut album “Dawn of Possession” (Roadrunner) in 1991, IMMOLATION has been a driving force in the extreme metal scene that they helped define. “Majesty and Decay” has enough diversity and dynamics to lay the most die-hard listener to waste! If any album can define death metal today in its most true and matured form, this is it! Experience IMMOLATION for yourself and revel in the Majesty and Decay!!! See the band devastate North America, Europe and beyond when they hit the live circuit in 2010/2011!

Flunk 8 Full Albums (electronica / Trip-hop)

Posted on January 27th, 2010 in Music by richigood || Comments Off

Flunk is a Norwegian electronic band consisting of members producer Ulf Nygaard, guitarist Jo Bakke, drummer Erik Ruud, and vocalist Anja Oyen Vister.

The band began as a project between Ulf, and Jo in Oslo, Norway in winter 2000/2001. Beginning as an instrumental and sampled vocal project, they were signed for a track on a compilation by Beatservice Records in winter 2001. On hearing the finished track, label manager Vidar Hanssen signed the unnamed band for a full album.

During early summer 2001, Ulf and Jo recorded most of the album and Anja improvised the vocals. After their vocals, Jo layered the guitars, but it would be a year before the album would be completed and released.

In spring 2002, the band was known as Flunk and they released their first single, a cover of New Order’s Blue Monday in April. The track was well received in the UK and was included on numerous compilations in North America and Europe. Later in April, their debut album For Sleepyheads Only was released which garnered great reviews in Norway. With the success of their album, BBC invited them to do a recording session for the Radio 1 show The Blue Room in London. Shortly after Notting Hill Art’s Club would become the location to their live debut. In the United States, they became signed to Guidance Recordings.

By summer 2002, raving reviews were being returned by British electronica magazines and in July they played Norway’s finest rock festival. In October For Sleepyheads Only was released in the US through Guidance Recordings. By November they played the London Jazz Festival.

Throughout 2003 their debut, For Sleepyheads Only was still being echoed across the globe in staggered releases with special editions released to Russia and Greece. Beatservice Records then went on to release Treat Me Like You Do – For Sleepyheads Only Remixed in June. While their debut continued to make it’s way around, the band wasted no time and began work on their second album for the majority of the year, which was recorded in Paris in October.

Their sophomore album, Morning Star was finished in March 2004 and saw a Norwegian release in May while the rest of the world received it in June. In 2005, Play America was released on Beatservice Records which included bonus tracks from the US version of Morning Star along with remixes.
