Allen Toussaint – The Bright Mississippi (2009)
Mp3 | 320 kbps | 44.1 Khz | Joint Stereo | 61 min 23 sec | 146.25 mb
Genre: Blues, Jazz | Label: Nonesuch | Tracks:12

Through his work as producer, composer, arranger and consummate session man, New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has truly earned living-legend status. He’s collaborated on landmark recordings for such artists as Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, the Meters, the Pointer Sisters and Labelle and released acclaimed albums of his own. The 70 year-old pianist, already a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was the recipient, on the recent Grammy Awards telecast, of the Recording Academy s prestigious Trustee Award, honoring a lifetime in the studio, both behind the scenes and in front of the mic. On The Bright Mississippi, his Nonesuch debut, Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic rock and roll sides. He salutes Big Easy stars of a previous generation, the jazz greats who, in the early 20th century, built the genre from the ground up and turned the ears of the world to New Orleans.

Candice Monique & The Optics – In My Soul (2010)
Soul | MP3 VBR 215 kbps | 69.3 MB
Time: 45:07 min | Label: Freestyle Records
2010 release from the vocalist, songwriter and poet whose individual vocal and lyrical style fuses classic and Neo-Soul, Jazz, R&B, Funk, and Pop. It is Candice’s wide ranging influences, from Bill Withers to Skunk Anansie that inform her musical style and simply recreating old skool sounds is not what Candice is about: this music could only be the product of now, by someone aiming to create quality rather than pastiche. In My Soul is a strong, confident debut that draws together disparate influences into a well-rounded modern sound that bodes well for Candice and her band. This is where the story starts and it is clear that a remarkable new talent is emerging in front of our ears and eyes! Freestyle Records. – Amazon

My Review
Just as good as the much more praised album “Z”.

External Review

It’s that moment every indie kid irrationally fears: your favorite band gets the call-up to the majors. Now that they’ve come to prominence via the California-based indie Darla Records, it’s My Morning Jacket’s turn to risk their careers and financial stability for a shot at recording a real statement album backed by a serious budget. But something’s not right here, or maybe something’s too right: Jim James’ high, lonesome croon is still recorded in a grain silo, and the band’s sound is still a cathedral of reverb, but where you might expect grandiose 40-piece orchestras, bombastic gospel choirs and glossy, state-of-the-art digital effects, you will find only the vast, empty space that has always accompanied the band’s instrumentation, allowing each note to resonate indefinitely, unhampered by unnecessary density. Rest assured, the faithful will have no problem kneeling here.

Last year’s exploratory Chocolate & Ice EP left quite a few open questions about the band’s future direction, many signals of which could be found in the 24-minute electro-funk centerpiece “Cobra”. But It Still Moves almost immediately confirms that the spacy Southern psych that My Morning Jacket built their name on remains their bread and butter. “Mahgeetah” is full of the long, drawn-out vocals that made “Can You See the Hard Helmet on My Head?” such an affecting and seemingly meaningful question; it also carries over the texture of that song, building a small epic out of the same elements. The band reacts to each verse differently– once with explosions of glimmering arpeggios, later with Johnny Quaid’s beautiful, understated guitar solo– before bringing the whole thing to one of those thunderous conclusions that makes classic rock live albums such a guilty pleasure.

“Golden” trots through a glowing haze of reverb on Patrick Hallahan’s steadily brushed beat, its lilting finger-picking and ghostly harmonies falling somewhere between The Band’s stately Canadicana and The Byrds’ “Ballad of Easy Rider”. “One Big Holiday” doesn’t look like much from the lyrics in the liners, but when James grabs hold of the opening line, “Wakin’ up feeling good and limber,” and draws it out in his singular way, it feels about a million times more weighty than it probably should. Near the album’s midpoint, the reverb reaches such titanic proportions that James’ drifting vocals begin to rival Sigur Rós’ Jon Thor Birgisson for shear ethereality, particularly on a track like “I Will Sing You Songs”. It’s like listening in the throes of a lucid dream.

“Easy Morning Rebel” puts your feet back on the ground with its swinging arrangement and Memphis horns (actually played by veteran Stax session men– one of the rare frills here made available by major label dollars). And then, finally, the band leaves James alone in his silo to close the album with the searching, desperate “One in the Same”, a song that finds him seemingly trying to sort fragmented memories into coherent thoughts. When he hits the lines, “It wasn’t till I woke up/ That I could hold down a joke or a job or a dream/ But then all three are one in the same,” it should put a lump in your throat.

And with that, It Still Moves strums to a close, an album by turns beautiful and possessed, by others raucous and fiery. If you’re standing by the record racks trying to choose between this and the band’s other major achievement, At Dawn, flip a coin; either way, you win. My Morning Jacket have made the move to the bigs in tremendous style, and as far as I can tell they haven’t compromised a thing to be there. If there’s one major flaw I could point to here, it’d be the album’s length– 74 minutes is a long runtime for any record, and as a result, the album is usually better off listened to in chunks– but that’s a small concern considering the riches that await inside.

Alice In Chains – Mtv Unplugged (1996)

Alice In Chains – MTV Unplugged (1996)

Alice In Chains - Mtv Unplugged (1996)

This is a very special album. MTV’s unplugged series continues with the band that seemed very unlikely to lend itself to this format. Strip away the production, special effects and heavy instrumentation of the albums and suddenly the mastery of Alice in Chains music is laid bare. This album is easily as surprising and involving as the Nirvana Unplugged session. It certainly is not as viceral as most of the studio albums and reflects most closely the Sap EP, it is however as loaded with angst, frustration and pain as the original album recordings, if not more so. It has been said on another reviewmoreÂ… that Layne was drugged up to the eyeballs to do this recording, this problem was an issue throughout his career and eventually (and sadly) took his life. His off stage lifestyle and depresive mindset coloured his music and is a big part of why AIC’s music was so heartwrenchingly effective. This live set is no different to that of the albums in that sense. This session in my opinion, like that of Nirvana MTV appearence, affirms the bands mastery of songcraft and is a fitting tribute to a dearly missed man whos music will live on in the powerful and classic albums that he left behind.

Stereophonics - You Gotta Go There To Come Back @192kb

External Reviews
Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones was still licking some serious wounds due to the breakup of his 12-year relationship with his girlfriend and a fallout with a best mate. The band’s 2001 release, Just Enough Education to Perform, briefly touched upon his broken heart; however, Jones’ darkest period came later as the band played countless sold-out gigs across Europe throughout late 2001 and 2002. Jones found himself personally and professionally isolated — emotionally distant from his bandmates and best friends, drummer Stuart Cable and bassist Richard Jones, and creatively exhausted. However the fire that had made this band a major force in the post-grunge English rock scene still burned. Stereophonics’ fourth album, You Gotta Go There to Come Back captures Jones’ soulful journey, and the band’s classic rowdy rock style is as sultry as ever. While their three previous albums exuded cockiness just for the sake of being cocky, You Gotta Go There to Come Back doesn’t care to be so snide. Sure, the band’s classic swagger remains an integral part of its overall appeal, but moving beyond that silly behavior has somehow affected Jones and his band. Cable became a father during the recording of this album while Richard Jones settled down and got married. Perhaps Jones craves a bit of stability as well? His confidence is on par throughout these 13 blues-rock-tinged songs as his life unfolds through words. “Jealousy” and “You Stole My Money Honey” are the album’s more vexed moments. “Climbing the Wall,” layered in acoustic guitars and horn and string arrangements, and “Nothing Is Precious at All” continue Stereophonics’ psychological sifting with warmth. “Madame Helga” is the punch in the face Jones has been waiting to deliver. Heart-pounding musicianship from the band itself makes this swanky gospel number an album standout and a career staple. It’s a song that Stereophonics have been wanting to make for years, and the overall fierce presentation finds the band at its best. Stereophonics are consistent with their craft, and You Gotta Go There to Come Back highlights the band’s growing talent as musicians, but the fact is that they’ve only made good records up to this point. They have yet to make a really great record, but that’s not to say Stereophonics don’t have what it takes. You Gotta Go There to Come Back is a solid rock effort, and in due time, the band will have its epic.

My Favorite Track(s):
Rainbows and Pots of Gold
Maybe Tomorrow
